Conversation between L Gregory Jones and Philip Bobbitt

Bobbitt: The nationstate is only a little more than a hundred years old (it replaced the imperial state). The nationsstate says: “Give us power, and we will improve your material well being.” This was what Hilter, Roosevelt, Stalin, etc. said.

Today, no state can give that guarantee. The world is too complex and the nation is influenced by too many factors which it can't control. The saying “Give us power, and we will improve your material well being” is not longer valid; the government does not have this possibility. Instead, we see the rise of the marketstate, which says: “Give us power, and we will improve your opportunities.”
